South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse are celebrated for their idyllic landscapes, historic architecture, and picturesque villages—making them ideal for for filmmakers and photographers.
The region’s diverse countryside settings have featured in numerous films and television series, attracting production crews from across the UK and beyond. With a wealth of historic buildings and beautiful natural landscapes, Southern Oxfordshire offers the perfect blend of indoor and outdoor locations for film shoots.
Below, we highlight some of the top filming and photography locations in the area.
Located further west than Henley, Wallingford and Thame, Abingdon is located just within an hour of the M25. It has multiple locations that would appeal and the historic Abbey buildings have been used more recently in 2020 for a documentary about the Thames with Tony Robinson for Channel 5 and a Sky TV drama back in 2016 The Last Dragon Slayer. In addition to its riverside location and access, the Unicorn Theatre, the Twitty Almshouses and the area around St Helen’s Churchyard are also available.

Henley-on-Thames, is rich in multiple location offers and has the added attraction of a riverside setting, most recently used in The Social Network. On this particular production the location manager was able to enlist the support of local businesses such as riverboat owners Hobbs to help deliver the desired outcome. Henley also boasts a Victorian cemetery and chapel, vineyards and a Town Hall building that offers large venues, available for us as productions spaces or unit bases and an as well as a film location and a striking double staircase. They can also provide a medieval barn and a market place setting with architecturally attractive buildings.
The market town of Thame has had its fair share of film and TV productions making use of various locations around the town, including a large and accessible cricket pitch, town hall and a wide and lengthy town centre with architecturally interesting buildings.
South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse are home to the charming market towns of Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon, Henley-on-Thames, Wallingford, Watlington, Wantage and Thame. Use the map below to explore the area.
