Abigail’s Party – 26th-29th March 2025
Abigail’s Party is a brilliant work that highlights the social and cultural shifts of 1970s Britain. Written and directed by Mike Leigh, it offers a sharp satire of the middle class and their aspirations. Through the lens of a seemingly ordinary suburban gathering, Leigh captures the awkwardness, superficiality, and insecurities that come with social climbing.
Opening at the Hampstead Theatre in 1977, Abigail’s Party quickly became an iconic piece of British theatre. Its adaptation for BBC’s Play for Today in the same year broadened its audience and solidified its status in British cultural history.
Leigh’s exploration of class, consumerism, and social pretensions through the characters—such as the self-absorbed Beverly, her nervous husband Laurence, and their guests—reveals the contradictions of the period. It’s a microcosm of a rapidly changing society, where image and appearance were starting to take precedence over substance.
